‘You know who they are. But you don’t know what they’ve done.’

Jessamine is a radio journalist. When we first meet her she is working for the BBC. As well as this, she volunteers for a Domestic Violence helpline. Jessamine is a victim of change within her organisation and via the women she has met through volunteering, is thrown into a murky world where she feels the duty to tell these women’s stories.

This book is hard hitting and an uncomfortable read in places. It takes you into a world which no one wants to think exists. It involves the kind of characters which you can see living on every street in the UK. From the rich and powerful, to the ordinary and mundane. And for this, it chills you to the bone.

It is a highly compelling read which explores the role of women within our society on numerous levels. The different ways in which women are exploited. From a woman within a highly respected organisation to a vulnerable girl living in a foster home.

This book is extremely well written. As I mentioned earlier, it is a challenging read in places due to its content and therefore, is not for everyone. It is a true mystery from start to finish with many themes running throughout.

Verdict: 4 stars.
